Islam Awareness Month July 2009

.

New Zealand IAW 2008 Inshaallah will be held between 4th – 10th August 2008.

The theme for this year will be STRONGER FAMILIES, BETTER SOCIETIES.

It is a nationwide theme, and aimed in increasing the awareness about Islamic teachings in our multi-ethnic community.

Muslims all around the world come from different and various backgrounds, but they are united under one name, ISLAM. The concept of brotherhood in Islam is something very important and unique, as what Allah said in the Quran;

“O mankind! We have created you from a single (pair) of male and female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another (not that you may hate each other). Surely, the most honorable of you, in the sight of Allah is (he, who is) the most righteous of you. Verily, Allah is All Knowing (Aleem) and is Well-Aware (Khabir, of all things).”

What is “Islam Awareness Week”?

Islam Awareness Week is a week of information and activities organised by local Muslims to increase New Zealanders’ awareness of their beliefs, values and practices, and to tackle misinformation about their religion in a positive way. The aim is to achieve greater understanding between us all, by promoting communication and new relationships. It’s also hoped to reduce ignorance and misconceptions about the world’s second largest religion: prejudices about Islam often result from misinformation through news media reporting on world events involving Muslims. Most provide little or no perspective as to what Islam’s take is on the issue or the position of the other 1.3999 billion Muslims. Negative reporting has been a major cause of the ignorance of Islam we see today.

On the other hand, interactions during Islam Awareness Week provide a chance for all of us to find out directly from each other what it is that concerns us or we want to know about. Activities during the Week such as Mosque open days, talks, video screenings and information displays will allow people an insight into the Islamic way of life and the Muslims who follow it. Some may build on what they know, others might change what they thought they knew, or learn basic facts, such as that most Muslims are not Arabs, or that Islam means peace. Others may be interested in topics of their own interest whether it be Peace, Women, War, Law, God, or whatever – if we just come to know each other a little better in our own ways, Islam Awareness Week will certainly have achieved its goal.

    salaam

can anyone suggest ideas or suggestions on topics that we want to focus for IAW this year?

and also on what kind of activities that you want to have during IAW, besides lectures, publications and mosque open day?

  2. sister Says:

it would be great if we change mosque open day… its always the same. ppl stop coming coz they seen it all before

  3. akh Says:

sorry sis, but wut exactly u mean by its always the same?
the content? the design? books or approaches used?

we are more than happy to accept new ideas and helps =)

  4. another sister Says:

i agree with sister, the layout, the books and the content are always the same. I have been to them in the last 4 years and i have memorised it by heart.

It will be good if we can also move the posters to the union hall for one day, students might find it easier to go there than to the masjid. Giving away free tea and hot drinks will also increase the traffic.

  5. akh Says:

we cant really change the content, but probably the layout and the presentations can be changed this year.

we can only use what we have, and currently we just try to select the best things that we have in our collections. if you have any new resources that we can use, please let us (i.e. MUSA) know. we are more than happy for that.

inshaallah there will be an IAW booth set up at the union (around the cafe, restaurant and student areas) during the week. there will be distributing brochures and some promo’s on Mosque Open Day and IAW for this year.

some refreshment (i.e. snacks, biscuits, tea & coffee) also will be available at the mosque during the mosque open day. maybe we can do the same thing at our boot at student union.

thanks for the comments and ideas sisters!! (,^^).v

  6. Amr Says:
