Assalamualaikum!
I am from Singapore and would like to know how big the muslim community is in Dunedin and the Uni itself? How’s the weather like and can Halal meat be obtained easily?
thanks

Wa’alaikumussalam warahmatullah
Jazakillah for visiting us here.
We dont have a proper number, but i’ll say about 200 to 300 muslims, and most of us are students in university. The numbers are increasing right now, and we are planning to expand the mosque capacity insha-Allah.
Weather in Dunedin? Unexpected! but most of the time cold and windy, though sometimes it can be very sunny.
We do have a Halal meat shop at the mosque, so don’t worry about getting Halal meat here. Some details about the shop are available at the Activities page.

I would like to know whether you have a lot of reverts on campus and what programmes you have to assist them?
December 19, 2007 at 1:22 am |
Wa alykum assalm sister,
Alhamdolila, with Allah swt’s Grace more people are finding their ways to Isalm. May Allah swt sustain them and us all.
As mentioned above, our community here is considered small, and alhamdolila friendly and very approachable. Members of the community; university students as well as Otago Muslim Association members can be contacted through Al-Huda Mosque in Clyde St. for support and assistance.
Different activities are available throughout the year, please refer to activities link above. In addition to the activities mentioned, sisters organise Islamic teachings gatherings, sports and social activities, please don’t hesitate to directly contact any of the sisters at the Mosque if you’re interested to find out more.

Assalamu’alaikum,
Hope you all are in the best of health and eeman.
i have a request to make and couldn’t find an email i could mail to… so i’ve decided to post it here.
A friend of mine will be going to Dunedin very very soon to do 1st year health science. unfortunately she hadn’t had her accommodation sorted out yet. She’s asking me if there are any muslimahs looking for a flatmate. Who could i refer to regarding this matter? We’re currently in Wellington and would appreciate all the last minute help we could get.
sincerely,
BintKhairAlBakr

Dear Sis. BintKhairAlBakr
Wa’alaikumussalam wa rahmatullah
Please move your cursor to the “Sisters Committee” or “Sister Aisha” above, and click on either one of them. You will get the email address that you want.
We want to avoid spam emails from coming into the committee members’ mailbox, that is why we don’t put them directly on the page.
I am sure the sisters in Dunedin can help you to figure out your friend’s accommodation problem.
Please let us know if you are still having problem with it.

Assalam-o-Alaikum
My name is Owais Malik. I am from Pakistan and working in Saudi Arabia as a Lecturer. I’ll join Otago in July, 2008 as a PhD student in Computer Science Department. I would be thankful if someone could inform me about the options of accomodation with muslim community.
Regards,
Owais
March 3, 2008 at 10:02 pm |
Assalamua Alaikum
1) Yes there are few halal food outlets in the central area. Some examples are Yilmaz Kebab & Pizza, Poppa’a Pizza, Lemon Grass and Spice Traders.
BUT note that NOT ALL foods at these outlets are Halal. You should ask them before you want to buy something. I’ll advise you to talk and get some more advices from our community members about this.
2) About the accommodation, there are few options. If you come with your family, it is advisable to get a flat at South or North Dunedin (instead of Central) because there are more peaceful and majority of the flats are in a good condition.
But if you are coming alone and don’t mind to live in the middle of the university, you can visit Otago Uni. accomodation website to get more information. There are few specific accommodations reserved for international & post-graduate students.
Please have a look at the link below.
http://www.otago.ac.nz/about/accommodation/index.html
If you want to arrange your own accomodation, I’ll suggest you to get a Studio Room around the university area. There are quiet good and comfortable. You can get more info on this from the university accommodation office as well.
May these answers help. Feel free to ask again if you are not sure.
Looking forward to meet you brothers!
Wassalam.

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE MOST BENEFICENT, THE MOST MERCIFUL..
this in probably more sentimental and melancholic than intelligent and logical, but after some reading and see myself of what happen in our society, its rather sad to see how people react or act to the situation or problem that occur in surrounding..
i think it is not too harsh to say that the thing that happening is the damning of so many a sinner in society by the so-called islamist..
we live in society that have laws and regulations.nothing wrong with that as long as we know that what we are doing is not against God’s laws..
the thing is when we are facing with a problem why must human law become our guidance instead of God’s law? correct me if i am wrong, but is it stated in God’s law that someone cannot marry with anyone after 2 years separation with their ex-husband or wife? then why must we so obey with that law?
i know there are lots and lots of argument saying that we have to care about our society welfare.so then is it fair to care of the society welfare but at the same time turn our muslim society to become… just because they have to wait for years to marry?
its rather sad…
islam is a not a religion that make thing hard for people to do but then why people make things hard for others?
when someone want to become a muslim, who us to judge their intention to become a muslim? we are not God. we dont know whats in other’s heart.then why we become so judgemental to others.why not we make thing easier for them?
corrrect me if i am wrong..ibn Talhah become a muslim and married ummu Sulaim right after that.at that time they never judge his intention to become a muslim and who knows after that he become someone who contribute a lot to our religion?
then why we nowadays become so judgemental about people intention to become a muslim? whatever their reason to become a muslim, it is betweeen them and Allah. we will never know what the reason is exactly because we are not God and we dont know what is in people’s heart..
but as a muslim, what we can do is we try to do our best to help them.make things easier for them.not make things hard for them.because we are human,we not God to judge them.

Walikum Assalam WarahmatuALLAHi WaBarakatu!
Thanks for the inquiry about New Zealand locations and prayer time table through our web-blog. You can find a copy of Ramadhan prayer time table for Wellington by clicking here. The closest mosque to the conference compound is Wellington Masjid (click here to see google map) located at 7-11 Queens Drive, Kilbirnie.
The closest and cheapest motel I could found is The Halswell Lodge it is located at 21 Kent Terrace Wellington 6000 . You can book the motel online by credit card only.
Regarding Ramadhan activities I can not help much because we are located in different city but you can contact FIANZ
Please do not hesitate to contact us in regards to any issue in New Zealand.
